Professional Packers and movers use best practices so that your belongings are transported safely, so we’ve compiled a short list on How to Pack for a Move.
TIPS TO GET STARTED:
Prepare your supplies.
Where can you find boxes for moving? You can either get them from a hardware store, a grocery store or department store may have flattened boxes they’ll give you for free… or if necessary we can provide them for you.
Use a sturdy table with a protective covering as a work surface, but we don’t recommend you use your dining room table. Keep your scissors, tape and markers nearby. On your table, spread a generous quantity of packing paper neatly stacked.
Pack each room separately
Start packing a few boxes per day well before the move. Packing one room at a tim will help you stay organized.
Label everything
Mark each box with a room number and the box. These should be recorded in a box log which shows the total number and number of packed boxes, as well as the number of packed boxes per room.
During the loading process, your Shamrock Van Operator will give you an official inventory.
Fill Boxes Safely.
When in doubt, add more filling to boxes.
The most common cause of damage and breakage during a move is improper packing. Make sure all fragile or valuable items are properly secured instide their boxes with either paper or other packing materials. If the item doesn’t move witin the box when lightly jostled, you’re good to go.
Check Box Bottoms
Be sure that the bottom of the box is secure and can support the weight of its contents. This may require cross taping both the inside and outside of the box.. to give that weak point extra support.
Keep it below 50 lbs.
Any heavier and it’s risking the safetly of not only yourself but the movers. Place heavier items at the bottom and lighter items at the top of the box. This will avoid having items crused under weight.
It is best to keep the weight of each box under 50 pounds. This will make moving them much easier.
Remember: that the smaller the box, the heavier the item.
Adding a lot of heavy items in a larger box will just make it unwieldy and possibly compromise the box itself during the moving process. Last thing you want is for a dozen heavy items to go spilling out all over the moving truck or van.
The most important thing you should know about packing
There are some things that you can pack and others that the pros will pack. There are also perishables and hazardous items which should not be transported, because certain items are not allowed in moving trucks.
What are the non-allowables?
Non Allowables fall into three main categories:
The items we can’t move
Items we will not move except in special circumstances.
Items you should move yourself.
You can save yourself the trouble of having to repack or dispose of items on the day of the move by knowing which items are not allowed.
